A Brief Overview of the Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is said to have helped millions of people to lose weight. The basic principle works on a 4 phase system.

Phase 1 is the kick-start phase. You start by kick-starting the diet by only eating protein, what’s called foundation vegetables, nuts or seeds and the majority of cheeses.

Phase 2: In this stage you introduce more dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and tomato juice.

Phase 3: This is the last stage where additional fruits, starch based vegetables and whole grains are eaten.

Phase 4: In this phase you've reached the goal of eating the right foods and the right amounts. You fine tune the diet so that it becomes a lifestyle change.

The Atkins diet is a low carb diet, which enables you to eat every 2-3 hrs so that you don’t feel hungry. It’s also based on your own finding your own personal carb balance, which you learn throughout the programme.

It also a calorie counted diet and although they say you don’t have to include exercise to lose weight on this diet, they do recommend some exercise.
