Thirsty Thursdays: Choosing Low Calorie Alcoholic Drinks
The question about the number of calories there are in a glass of wine or a beer is open to lots of misinterpretation. The number of calories will depend on the size of your glass as well as what you put in it!
Beer: Low alcohol beers have less calories than standard beer, so switching to low alcohol varieties also means you'll be consuming fewer calories.
Cider: If you're a cider drinker then it's bad news because about half a pint of cider contains a whopping 240 calories!
Wine: 125ml of sweet red wine contains 120 calories whereas the same size glass of red wine contains 85 calories – so switch from sweet white to red or go for a medium or dry white as these have fewer calories that sweet white. The name should make realise that 'sweet' will be higher in calories!
Spirits: 25ml of spirits contain over 50 calories when drunk neat – add a mixer and the calorie content will soar, unless you go for the slimline varieties which don't usually have any calorific values. Brandy and sherry contain the most calories.
If you think you'll swap to Alcopops you may be surprised to know that they contain an estimated 200 calories!!
So, if you want to lose weight stay off the alcohol – it will be more beneficial for your well-being and health as well!
